How to use the ideal gas law calculator

Firstly, make sure to select the variable that you want to calculate. This will reveal the correct formula for the chosen case under the input fields. After that put in your data in the three valid input fields.

The answer will then show both in the empty field uppermost, and also as the answer of the formula under the fields.

For example, say you want to calculate the Volume when you have the following data; pressure = 101325 Pa (atmospheric pressure), amount of substance = 3 mol and temperature = 773 K (500 °C). First thing, check the box which says calculate volume. Then the expression for volume will show in large font. Secondly, insert your data into the fields for pressure, amount of substance and temperature. Make sure to use the correct SI units. Done correctly, the answer Volume, V = 0.1902912 m3 will display under the pressure input fields, and also as the answer to the expression for volume underneath.

Each field can also evaluate expressions. So, going back to the example, say you want to see what the pressure drops to if the gas is expanded to twice the volume. Doing this is simple. Just check the box for "calculate pressure" (This will change the expression underneath to solve for pressure), and then put *2 after 0.1902912 in the volume field which is now active. This will show the answer 50662.5 Pa as if 0.3805824 was typed in the Volume field.
