About Roman numerals:

As implied by its name, Roman numerals stem from Ancient Rome. The system is built on adding together pre-defined values. The following symbols are used:

SymbolValue
I1
V5
X10
L50
C100
D500
M1000
For example, to express 623 in roman numerals you would write DCXXIII, i.e. 500+100+10+10+1+1+1. However, for the digits 4 and 9, the system uses subtraction instead of addition, by putting the smaller value directly in front of the greater value. For instance, you would write 14 as XIV, i.e. 10+5-1, and 299 is written as CCXCIX, i.e. 100+100+100-10+10-1. The number 299 could have been expressed as CCIC as well, but by definition you are only allowed to subtract by a number that is one order smaller than the one you subtract from, and therefore IC for 99 is incorrect.

Roman numerals are often used in numbered lists, and in succession of leaders, such as the Pope Benedict XVI.
